our submission guidelines

submissions due: july 1

unfortunately, because we don't charge people to read our magazine, we can't pay contributors right now.

**if you would like to submit a piece for our upcoming website blog, NOT to be in the zine, email or direct message us the submission & your cover letter at faultlineslit@gmail.com. If a piece submitted for the zine isn't right for that issue's theme, but we still love it, we may contact you to have it featured on our blog.**

we're looking for work by marginalized voices - queer, poc, neurodivergent, disabled -- if you've been historically oppressed and overlooked, you might as well get something out of it :)

we give feedback for every submission

we're open to pretty much everything

- art + photography

- poetry
- short/flash fiction and creative nonfiction
- novel excerpts to promote a novel coming out (only if they are contained stories and could be read as a stand alone piece)
- songs/music
- short film
- essays

- articles

- apps and open-source programs

- anything else you can think of!!

we accept reprints, but a limited number.

we accept simultaneous submissions. if your work is accepted elsewhere, shoot us an email at faultlineslit@gmail.com to either withdraw it or submit as a reprint (so if we choose to publish it, we can credit the first publication).

formatting

- no name or personal information in your submission (we're reading blind)

- if you're submitting writing, black 12 point Times New Roman double spaced unless there's a stylistic justification for different formatting. include page numbers in the top right corner. submit as a pdf

- if you're submitting art/photography, include alternate text

- if you're submitting a film/other type of video, make it an unlisted video on youtube and send us the link -- make sure it has closed captions!

- poetry, maximum of 3 poems

- fiction, one story, max. 3500 words

- photography, max. 10 photos

- film, max. 30 minutes

- essays + articles, maximum one essay/article, max. 1200 words

- music, maximum 3 songs/compositions

- screenplays/scripts, max. 30 minutes

rights and stuff

if we choose to publish your work Fault Lines receives first serial rights and archival rights, meaning we get to say that we found you first :). upon publication, all rights revert back to you.

we will respond to submissions within one month of when the reading period closes. if more than a month has passed, follow up in an email to faultlineslit@gmail.com

if we reject your work, it doesn't mean it's bad. sometimes pieces won't line up with the cohesive whole we're trying to create.

please feel free to revise it and send it in to general website submissions.
